OCTOBER 2014
1-2 October:
FINAT committee meetings in Amsterdam. FINAT management unveils the new
strategy to the working committees. Besides opening its scope (now extended from merely ‘self-adhesive’ to also embracing ‘adjacent’ converting technologies within the reach of self- adhesive label manufacturer), one of the major changes will be the rebranding of the FINAT congress into the ‘European Label Forum’. The new philosophy behind the congress will reflect FINAT’s vision on being the unique source of relevant knowledge, networks and information which is key to the strategic success of international label business.
24 October: FNAT managing director addresses label converters at Nilpeter’s wine label symposium at the company’s headquarters in Slagelse (Denmark).
28 October: representatives of the European label associations meet in Amsterdam to continue their half-yearly discussions on mutual subjects and initiatives. An important part of the agenda was dedicated to regulatory affairs, such as
the harmonisation of GMP guidelines for food labels; harmonised LCA guidance document for the label industry; ISO/TC122 WG14 Label materials work item; translation of the German Occupational Health and Safety Guides and the packaging & Packaging Waste Directive. Regarding the latter it was ascertained that although FINAT with the help of major stakeholders lobbied at EU level to not have release liner classified as packaging several years ago, some EU countries are upholding their own interpretation, and do regard liner as packaging. Austria is now one of the new countries to be affected by such an interpretation (see also article Public Affairs). The national associations deliberated on possible actions to inform their members of these developments.
Programmes undertaken by each of the associations and FINAT were also dealt with. These concerned: raw material trends indicators, events, the label associations’ portal, the role of the Labelexpo Advisory Board and last but not least FINAT’s new strategy.
NOVEMBER 2014
