innovation
This category has two joint Group
winners
Schreiner Group GmbH & Co,
Germany for Electric Conductive
Films (ECF).
This is a different application for the use of
the narrow web label press. The
conductive copper layer is laminated to a
clear self adhesive substrate and die cut to
very tight tolerances. The 120-300µ ECF
can be fitted onto straight or curved
surfaces. The distance between the
0.6mm copper lines is 0.7mm. and bare
contact points are included for connection
to other electrical components by normal
means e.g. soldering or mechanical means.
The circuit can be designed exactly to the
customer’s requirements.

IXcode for banks
An interesting and very clever application
for keeping a PIN number secure until
needed. A unique film product which is
visually opaque is pulled to reveal the PIN
number. The film stretches and cannot be
replaced as it is extended for a one time
use. Three different film layers have been
used to produce this result. The exact
details are confidential but the result is an
excellent application of a narrow web
press to produce a “different” security
measure.
special mentions
Two other labels caught the judges’
attention. Although they were not given
any awards the visual impact of each is
considered worth a mention.
Hennessy VSOP printed by Rotakett
AB, Sweden
The 3D visual effect of this label is
outstanding, offering the observer a
really “deep” effect in the background.
So much so that you are tempted to look
behind the label to see the depth! Using
screen printing for the main images and
hot foiling this label deserved mention
for the use of Rolling Optics 3D material.
The S Collection Cotton printed by EL
Yaman Group, Lebanon
The visual and tactile effect of the
“cotton flowers” offer an idea for
presenting a product with a different
shelf appeal for customers. The
combination of the white cotton and the
silver background certainly grabbed the
attention of the judges. Screen and flexo
printing was used in addition to a flock
printing stage.
conclusion
The number of Highly Commended
awards totalled 73 whilst there were 21
category awards and 5 Group awards
(One joint). A Best in Show was also
selected. The Highly Commended
certificates will be available during the
Congress after the presentation evening
for attendees or will be sent directly
following the Congress to those who did
not attend the Congress.
The Best in Show, Group and Category
awards will be presented during the
Awards presentation ceremony on the
Thursday evening of the Congress in
Munich (13 June). The FINAT winners of
the World Label Awards judging which
took place just before LabelExpo in
Chicago 2012 will also be recognised
during the awards ceremony with the
presentation of their awards. The awards
ceremony will once again be in an Oscars
style along with the recent show
business profile.
What I find unnerving as chairman of
judges is the habit entrants have of
leaving the dispatch of their entries to
the last moment which has an inevitable
effect on the ability of the FINAT staff to
process all the entries in time to allow
the judging to begin on time. This can
have unfortunate consequences as
happened this year. Although one
company did send a mass of entries
about a week before the judging began,
the courier “lost” the consignment
which meant the company had to panic
in trying to supply replacement samples
in time for the first day of judging. In
another case we had to advise a company
not to send their entries as they had not
even dispatched them from their factory
on the day the judging started. Whilst
we will make allowances where possible
for delayed samples, it would help the
organisation of the administration and
preparation of the label competition
entries if the samples were sent in earlier.
Statistically 95% of the entries arrived
three to five days AFTER the official
closing date!! The only saving grace is
that the FINAT offices are the location
where the judging takes place which
helps the logistics to some degree.
Later in the year I will be selecting the
best labels from our winners to
represent FINAT in the forthcoming
World Label awards (WLA) which will
take place in Brussels the day before the
Labelxpo show opens on24 September.
The new classes introduced last year
were a great success and include 5 Best
of the Best awards which will be
presented during the Tarsus Global
awards evening on the first day of the
exhibition.
