categories were the second most popular
in the marketing group with 18% of the
total entries between them, whilst
flexographic printing continued to be the
most popular dedicated printing process.
The rest of the categories attracted many
entries apart from the new linerless
category which did not attract even one
response. This year the judges selected
two entries for Special Mention.
Although they were not considered to be
suitable for an official award the judges
felt that the entries be commended for
their visual impact.
The number of Marketing Group entries
continues to dominate the total number
of entries (178) compared to the Printing
Processes Group (46) a ratio of 4:1.
The judging panel included regulars
Murat Sipahioglu from Turkey, Steve
Wood from UK and Chairman Tony
White from the UK. Unfortunately the
invited German judge had to withdraw at
the very last minute due to heath issues.
We were joined by Rik Olthof, a design
expert from Cartils in The Netherlands.
We were also fortunate to welcome Ian
Healey Managing Editor of Dr. Harnisch
Verlags GmbH, a well known publisher of
food and beverages magazines as an
additional judge for the final day of
judging.
We could not have completed the judging
without the dedicated work of Jakovina
(FINAT Secretariat) who managed
(despite the late arrival of many entries)
to have the majority of judging folders
ready for the judging to begin on time. I
must also mention my wife Connie who
again not only added up and checked the
individual marks for each entry but also
helped in laying out the category entries
ready for inspection saving us
considerable judging time (oh yes the tea
and coffee kept us going through the
exacting task of examining EVERY entry).
Without the help of these two ladies we
would not have been able to complete
the judging procedure in time.

Many of the winners from this
competition will be entered in the L9
World Label Awards competition which
will be judged just before Labelexpo in
Brussels in September.
In the 2012 L9 WLA competition FINAT
received 3 main awards two to the
Schreiner Group (D) and the Marzek
Group (Austria). Honourable Mention
awards included Skanem Skurup (SW),
F.S. Etiketten (D), Etimag (TR) and
Collotype (USA) (See page 76-77 for
more details). The winning plaques will
be presented during the joint FINAT/
VskE Congress in Munich in June.

Collotype Labels, Australia for
Carnival Love
This is a busy and colourful label evoking
the sprit of the carnival depicted by the
personalities expected to attend such an
event. The old looking poster adds
atmosphere. Offset litho
was used with an unusual
die cutting format
making it that little bit
different. It also scored
high marks for its design
elements. The use of
high build and matt
varnishes added a deft
touch to the whole label.

Extra Dry Gin
A label ideally suited
for the digital process
due to its short run.
The use of a fluted die
to achieve positive and
negative embossing
along with well
produced and intricate
detailed foiling makes
for a very attractive
label. The fine contrast
